A Hamiltonian Formulation for Long Internal Waves

چکیده
A novel canonical Hamiltonian formalism is developed for long internal waves in a rotating environment. This includes the effects of background vorticity and shear on the waves. By restricting consideration to flows in hydrostatic balance, superimposed on a horizontally uniform background of vertical shear and vorticity, a particularly simple Hamiltonian structure arises, which can be thought of as describing a nonlinearly coupled infinite collection of shallow water systems. The kinetic equation describing the time evolution of the spectral energy of internal waves is subsequently derived, and a stationary Kolmogorov solution is found in the high frequency limit. This is surprisingly close to the Garrett–Munk spectrum of oceanic internal waves. submitted to JFM

Hamiltonian formalism and the Garrett-Munk spectrum of internal waves in the ocean.
Wave turbulence formalism for long internal waves in a stratified fluid is developed, based on a natural Hamiltonian description. A kinetic equation appropriate for the description of spectral energy transfer is derived, and its anisotropic self-similar stationary solution corresponding to a direct cascade of energy toward the short scales is found. This solution is very close to the high wave-...
متن کاملHamiltonian Formulation for Water Waves over a Variable Bottom: Asymptotic Models and Numerical Simulations
We present a Hamiltonian, potential-flow formulation for nonlinear surface water waves in the presence of a variable bottom. This formulation is based on a reduction of the problem to a lower-dimensional system involving boundary variables alone. To accomplish this, we express the Dirichlet–Neumann operator as a Taylor series in terms of the surface and bottom variations. This expansion is conv...
متن کاملHamiltonian Formulation and Long Wave Models for Internal Waves
We derive a Hamiltonian formulation of the problem of a dynamic free interface (with rigid lid upper boundary conditions), and of a free interface coupled with a free surface, this latter situation occurring more commonly in experiment and in nature. Based on the linearized equations, we highlight the discrepancies between the cases of rigid lid and free surface upper boundary conditions, which...
متن کاملNon Permanent Form Solutions in the Hamiltonian Formulation of Surface Water Waves
Using the KAM method, we exhibit some solutions of a finite dimensional approximation of the Zakharov Hamiltonian formulation of gravity water waves (Zakharov, 1968), which are spatially periodic, quasi-periodic in time, and not permanent form travelling waves. For this Hamiltonian, which is the total energy of the waves, the canonical variables are some complex quantities an and a ∗ n ( n ∈ Z)...
متن کاملHamiltonian Long-Wave Expansions for Free Surfaces and Interfaces
The theory of internal waves between two bodies of immiscible fluid is important both for its interest to ocean engineering and as a source of numerous interesting mathematical model equations that exhibit nonlinearity and dispersion. In this paper we derive a Hamiltonian formulation of the problem of a dynamic free interface (with rigid lid upper boundary conditions), and of a free surface and...
